AUSTIN (AP) -- Former gubernatorial candidate Carole Keeton Strayhorn may not be putting politics behind her just yet.
Strayhorn says she's getting nudges from supporters about running for Austin mayor in 2009.
Before her rise in state politics, she was elected Austin's first woman mayor 31 years ago.
Strayhorn's response?
She was quoted in the Austin American-Statesman as saying -- "Never say never."
The 68-year-old says she has fielded e-mails from as far away as East Texas asking if she's running for mayor again. The possibility of a Strayhorn run surfaced publicly yesterday on the capital news Web site Texas Weekly.
Strayhorn started politics as a Democrat, serving as Austin mayor from 1977 to 1983. She switched to the GOP before her election to the Texas Railroad Commission and then comptroller.
She ran unsuccessfully for governor as an independent candidate in 2006, losing to incumbent Republican Rick Perry.
A self-described "one tough grandma," Strayhorn has established the Our Texas Grandchildren Foundation focused on helping foster children.
