ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (AP) -- John McCain is working to assure gun owners that his administration would not infringe upon their rights.
Today he visited a West Virginia gun and fishing equipment shop, buying a rod, bobbers and other fishing supplies.
The Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting has work to do with the gun-rights lobby, having pushed through campaign finance legislation that gun supporters say has muzzled free speech. He has also favored tighter restrictions for buying guns at gun shows.
He says the only gun controls he favors are limits to keep guns from people with criminal backgrounds or signs of mental problems.
But McCain says he is expecting the votes of gun owners in his general election campaign.
