AUSTIN (AP) -- Texas Democratic Party officials received at least 50 challenges to caucus results as Texas' presidential delegate selection system moved into its next phase.

Party spokesman Hector Nieto says the figure is a higher number than usual.

The deadline for filing delegate challenges stemming from the March 29 county and senate district conventions was Monday.

The challenges will be forwarded to a temporary credentials committee so work can begin before the state convention. Nieto says that committee will announce when it is meeting and will inform those who filed challenges.

Any challenges that can't be agreed on by temporary committee members will be handed over to a permanent credentials committee for action at the convention.

Hillary Rodham Clinton won the popular vote in the state's primary March 4. She earned 65 national convention delegates to Barack Obama's 61.

Then, after caucuses at the precinct and county levels, Obama was awarded more caucus delegates based on county convention results tallied by the AP.
